Oreck XL Edge® Upright Vacuum
A very comprehensive review
I had the original model.
Pros: VERY strong suction, but I liked the older model better.
Cons: The strong suction picks up throw rugs so it cannot be used on throw rugs. It may not be, but it feels heavier than the older model. With this model the handle does not go down from the upright position to the vacuum position - one has to use their foot to hold the base down with their foot (a definate nuisance) compared to the older model, and it will eventually mess up the paint. It is higher and does not fit under things as well as the older model. The wheels keep hitting (catching) on things you are trying to vacuum around. I am a 70 year old male in good health, and with the old one I had to rest once each time I vacummed the entire house. With this one I have to rest twice. It is much more difficult to use. The handle height seems to be a little higher which makes it more tiring and difficult to use. It does have 2 suction speeds, high or low. I think what I will be doing is 1 week I will vacuuum on high suction, and the nexk on low suction. Would I recommend it to others (?) - I only had a cooice of yes or no. It would depend on how much stamina the person has, but in general ,I would say yes.

This is my second Oreck. Bought another brand to replace the first one, but it does not come close to the Oreck. Keeping the first one to vacuum the basement. Works great on our new thicker carpet.

Poor quality parts/non specific warranty info
I have owned this product for 6 months now. I think it cleans very well and have no real issues concerning this. However, I am disappointed that the power cords outer insulation cracked in the first few days of use. This was not due to any abuse on my part, just an inferior quality of the cord. I have read the warranty information which states defects are covered for a limited period of time from purchase. However, you can read it yourself on this site and you will discover that it doesn't state what the period of time is. I am disappointed that the duct tape I have had on it since the first week of ownership is really not working anymore so I am driving 20 minutes to the closet service center to see if they will cover the repair since I don't know how long the warranty is for.
It's annoying to have a product break and cause all this extra effort in the first week of ownership.

Upright mode great for carpets, the hose is too short & weak.
I bought the upright edge because of its superior suction and the fact that it has a hose extension.
The suction in its upright mode is excellent. It works very well on carpeting.
However, the upright Edge is designed to decrease suction when the hose extension is in use.
Oreck recommends that if one needs the best suction for the hose, a customer must purchase a canister vacuum. I can't imagine any reason for designing the hose extension suction to decrease than marketing canister vacuums.
Since I did not know about the lower suction on the hose extension when buying the Edge, I was rather disappointed to figure this out.
Since the hose does not work well, the upright edge is not good for furniture, carpet edges, or the corners of walls or window ledges.
Also, the hose extension hose is rather short. I tried to vacuum up the corner of a door frame and the hose snapped off the housing. I ordered a new hose extension but now I know to be careful with how high I try to reach with it.
This past week, I did as Oreck recommended and purchased an Oreck canister vacuum to deal with things I needed a hose for.
Even with the disappointment of the hose, I am happy that this vacuum uses a Hepa filter bag, takes care of cat hair well on carpets, and has strong suction. I also chose Oreck because of the trustworthy and effective service, replacement parts, and tune ups.

I purchased my Oreck XL Edge April, 1912 on line and paid $249.00 for it. I was not sure if I would be pleased since it was much heaver than the Oreck I hand owned previously. It also will not lie flat enough to clean under the beds. I decided to keep it rather than going to the trouble to send it back. Big mistake! After having the vacuum for only 9 months the covering over the power cord broke and pulled away right where it attaches to the vacuum. I called customer service and was told to take it to a store. They said the nearest store was 12 miles away. Well that is just not true it is 32 miles away. You consider that I would have to make 2 trips and be without a cleaner for who knows how long. They offered to replace it and sent a ups label but no box. I figured still not worth it since I would be in the same situation in another 9 months. Decided to take it to someone local for repair and the man said the oreck vacuums were the worst made cleaners on the market. Will cost me $36.00 for repair and hope it won't break again. I would not recommend an Oreck. They are just not made to last.

Powerful, Quiet, much different than the older XL's
If you have never owned an Oreck this may still be a useful review and if you have owned an XL in the past this should be very useful.
First, this is one powerful machine - you don't dare run this over a throw rug on full power, it will suck it straight into the roller - I stopped mine just in time. But it lifts the carpets and they look great when done. It is a one pass for the most part.
I just received my Xl Edge which I bought to replace a 12 year old XL. There's some significant differences that previous XL owners should know.
1. The power head is much larger than the original XL's. This machine does not go under furniture like the older XL does - it is taller. I cannot get it as far under the bed and it does not fit under the night stand like the older XL.
2. It is wider than the older XL so it may not fit in all the spaces that the older XL will - Only a minor issue for me.
3. Edge cleaning is not as good as the older XL because the roller does not get as close to the base board as the older model.
4. It is heavier which you know if you read the description. It is nearly 5 Lbs. heavier than the previous XL so it is not as easy to whip through the house. Between the weight and the incredible suction, this vacuum is defiantly not as easy to push around. This is not a problem for me but i did like the ease of use of the older model. I decided on the XL Edge over the magnesium model because I felt that the magnesium unit is too light weight and it feels cheaply made - I'm not saying it is but it feels cheap. I don't think the ultra light weight of the power head is enough to keep the vacuum firmly planted on the floor. I wanted something more substantial feeling so I went with the XL Edge.
I wish they still made the older XL, I would have bought the same one that died on me after a dozen years - it was super easy to use and pulled the carpet nap up very well and cleaned well - sometimes a product comes along that does not need to be changed or sun-setted
for a new model - the older XL was that product - it did the job well, was easy to use and self-service and had excellent life expectancy.
i bought my XL Edge from the Oreck site on sale for $249.00 which I feel is a very good deal - i don't think there is anything else as good for that price. Maybe they are just clearing out inventory for a new model but if you are thinking of buying then get in on this deal.
Some of the reviews mention a hose/wand attachment - the model that is on sale does not have that accessory which I did not want anyway. Some complain about the lights on some models - the lights are fine for the purpose - you don't buy a vacuum for the lights, turn on the light in the room if you need more light.
The manual gives the typical care instructions with one exception, it says to wipe clean the "connector deflector assembly area" but there is no other mention of this part in the entire manual - no indication what where this is. It must be important since they tell you to clean it so you would think that they would tell you what and where this is - i guess I'll find out when something goes wrong from lack of cleaning this part. It's obviously part of the motor housing but the rest is guess work.
This is a well built vacuum that works very well - you cannot do better if you get this while it's on sale on the Oreck website. It's more work to use than the older units but it does a very good job.
My one issue is the yearly "tune-up" that is required - 3 annual services come with the cost of the unit but I've seen inside vacuums and there is nothing to tune up other than make sure it's clean and that the motor does not need brushes - there's nothing to adjust, the motor is mounted in a fixed position. I think that if you pay the higher cost of an Oreck (or any other premium brand) the quality of the design, materials and build should produce a vacuum that needs nothing for at least 3 to 5 years of typical use. it's free for the first 3 years so not an issue until the 4th year when the cost of ownership goes up. I just have an issue with a vacuum in this price range that requires yearly maintenance visits to the shop. I never took my other Oreck in for any tune-ups and it lasted 12 years.
One last point, the variable speed on the XL Edge is just that - variable. It is not a 2 or 3 speed, it has a digital controller that gives a smooth speed range which actually works much much better than a fixed 2 or 3 speed. this is a great design feature.

Well worth the price
This is without a doubt the best quality vacuum I have ever owned. I shipped around for over a month before making this purchase, I even tried out several models at the local Oreck store. I was blown away by the amount of suction this thing has. It will actually pick up my smaller rugs and move them around. As for as Durability goes, well I haven't owned it long enough, but expect great results. I don't like the upright locking position. It feels like I'm going to break it when I pull down to use it. The bright lights and the variable speed switch are nice little extras that set this unit apart for me. A very nice vacuum for a first time Oreck owner.

Don't know what to think
I am on the fence about returning this unit, it's OK but I have used much less expensive vacuums that do the same thing, I don't really know how they can justify the price.
The only "pro" so far is that it hasn't clogged on me yet, my stain release carpet is designed to let go of an extreme amount of nap when vacuumed, so most of what is in the HEPA bag is just carpet fibers. Other vacuums i've tried clog in a matter of minutes.
It also has a squeak or squeal it lets out when you push forward, I don't know where it's coming from but it keeps vacuuming so I keep pushing.
All in all, not enough to recommend this to anyone, unless they are looking for a "bag" upright since most of the competitor units you find in stores don't use bags they use dust cans that are gross and a mess.
