HEPA Filter vs. Truman Cell®: which fits your needs?
Oreck offers its customers a full line of air purifiers that use either Truman Cell® technology or True HEPA filters. Which option is right for your home? Compare and decide!
|HEPA||Truman Cell (EP)|
|How it works:||
HEPA stands for High Efficiency Particulate Air.
HEPA filters are high density paper mats composed of randomly arranged fibers and pleated in a “V” pattern. The mat is bonded onto a sturdy base, forming the core of the filter. Particles are captured on one side of the filter which prohibits them from moving through to the other side.
The Truman Cell® is Oreck's exclusive EP or electrostatic precipitator filter.
It is composed of a series of metal plates and wires. Particles from the air are positively charged as they enter the cell wires and then are attracted to negatively charged plates where they stick until cleaned off.
|What it does:||
Captures 99.97% of dust, allergens, smoke, pet dander and pollen particles as small as 0.3 microns from the air that passes through its filter.
Captures dust, allergens, smoke, pet dander and pollen particles from the air that passes through its filter, pulling them out of the air like a magnet.
|Maintenance||HEPA filter will need to be replaced over time.||Truman Cell is permanent, never needs replacing.|
|Both the Oreck AirInstinct® 200 and 100 come with a 3-year HEPA filter installed. However, HEPA filter life will vary by usage and environment, including factors such as room size, the pollen count in your neighborhood or whether you have pets or smokers in your home.||All models have a 30-day indicator light to let you know when it's time to clean the Truman Cell®. Simply remove, wash with soap and water, rinse clean, then re-insert into the unit.|
A 3-year odor filter comes installed in the AirInstinct® 200; the AirInstinct® 100 comes with a 1-year odor filter.
Both filters reduce VOCs (volatile organic compounds such as paint smells and off-gases for new rugs and furniture, and aerosol vapors) and household odors that pass through the filter. Filter life varies with usage and environment and must be replaced.
Oreck air purifiers with Truman Cells all come with a disposable odor absorber (ProShield model) or Helios Shield, a permanent odor filter (ProShield Plus and DualMax models).
All of these odor filters help reduce odors and VOCs (volatile organic compounds) from the air that passes through it.
|Sound||Slightly higher noise levels than air purifiers using EP technology because more power is required to overcome the resistance that the airflow encounters as it travels through the solid HEPA filter.||Generally quieter than air purifiers that use HEPA filters because its technology and design (you can see through the metal wires of the Truman Filter®) requires less power.|
|Efficiency||The Oreck AirInstinct® 200, AirInstinct® 100 and AirInstinct® 75 are all ENERGY STAR® qualified.||The Oreck DualMax® is ENERGY STAR® qualified.|
