The Oreck Advantage: Direct Suction

Our direct suction design delivers dirt in a straight, efficient path right to the vacuum bag. It's a streamlined design that works beautifully with a smaller motor — and one reason why Oreck bagged uprights are so lightweight. Here's how: our upright vacuums incorporate a "dirty air system" in which dirt is pulled through a fan that breaks it into smaller particles that get sucked up into the vacuum. Oreck's smaller motor drives this fan, as well as the brushroll. Because these smaller motors sit closer to the floor they provide efficient suction and are able to spin the brushroll incredibly fast.

Powerful, Quiet, much different than the older XL's If you have never owned an Oreck this may still be a useful review and if you have owned an XL in the past this should be very useful. First, this is one powerful machine - you don't dare run this over a throw rug on full power, it will suck it straight into the roller - I stopped mine just in time. But it lifts the carpets and they look great when done. It is a one pass for the most part. I just received my Xl Edge which I bought to replace a 12 year old XL. There's some significant differences that previous XL owners should know. 1. The power head is much larger than the original XL's. This machine does not go under furniture like the older XL does - it is taller. I cannot get it as far under the bed and it does not fit under the night stand like the older XL. 2. It is wider than the older XL so it may not fit in all the spaces that the older XL will - Only a minor issue for me. 3. Edge cleaning is not as good as the older XL because the roller does not get as close to the base board as the older model. 4. It is heavier which you know if you read the description. It is nearly 5 Lbs. heavier than the previous XL so it is not as easy to whip through the house. Between the weight and the incredible suction, this vacuum is defiantly not as easy to push around. This is not a problem for me but i did like the ease of use of the older model. I decided on the XL Edge over the magnesium model because I felt that the magnesium unit is too light weight and it feels cheaply made - I'm not saying it is but it feels cheap. I don't think the ultra light weight of the power head is enough to keep the vacuum firmly planted on the floor. I wanted something more substantial feeling so I went with the XL Edge. I wish they still made the older XL, I would have bought the same one that died on me after a dozen years - it was super easy to use and pulled the carpet nap up very well and cleaned well - sometimes a product comes along that does not need to be changed or sun-setted for a new model - the older XL was that product - it did the job well, was easy to use and self-service and had excellent life expectancy. i bought my XL Edge from the Oreck site on sale for $249.00 which I feel is a very good deal - i don't think there is anything else as good for that price. Maybe they are just clearing out inventory for a new model but if you are thinking of buying then get in on this deal. Some of the reviews mention a hose/wand attachment - the model that is on sale does not have that accessory which I did not want anyway. Some complain about the lights on some models - the lights are fine for the purpose - you don't buy a vacuum for the lights, turn on the light in the room if you need more light. The manual gives the typical care instructions with one exception, it says to wipe clean the "connector deflector assembly area" but there is no other mention of this part in the entire manual - no indication what where this is. It must be important since they tell you to clean it so you would think that they would tell you what and where this is - i guess I'll find out when something goes wrong from lack of cleaning this part. It's obviously part of the motor housing but the rest is guess work. This is a well built vacuum that works very well - you cannot do better if you get this while it's on sale on the Oreck website. It's more work to use than the older units but it does a very good job. My one issue is the yearly "tune-up" that is required - 3 annual services come with the cost of the unit but I've seen inside vacuums and there is nothing to tune up other than make sure it's clean and that the motor does not need brushes - there's nothing to adjust, the motor is mounted in a fixed position. I think that if you pay the higher cost of an Oreck (or any other premium brand) the quality of the design, materials and build should produce a vacuum that needs nothing for at least 3 to 5 years of typical use. it's free for the first 3 years so not an issue until the 4th year when the cost of ownership goes up. I just have an issue with a vacuum in this price range that requires yearly maintenance visits to the shop. I never took my other Oreck in for any tune-ups and it lasted 12 years. One last point, the variable speed on the XL Edge is just that - variable. It is not a 2 or 3 speed, it has a digital controller that gives a smooth speed range which actually works much much better than a fixed 2 or 3 speed. this is a great design feature. Well worth the price This is without a doubt the best quality vacuum I have ever owned. I shipped around for over a month before making this purchase, I even tried out several models at the local Oreck store. I was blown away by the amount of suction this thing has. It will actually pick up my smaller rugs and move them around. As for as Durability goes, well I haven't owned it long enough, but expect great results. I don't like the upright locking position. It feels like I'm going to break it when I pull down to use it. The bright lights and the variable speed switch are nice little extras that set this unit apart for me. A very nice vacuum for a first time Oreck owner. November 20, 2012
Don't know what to think I am on the fence about returning this unit, it's OK but I have used much less expensive vacuums that do the same thing, I don't really know how they can justify the price. The only "pro" so far is that it hasn't clogged on me yet, my stain release carpet is designed to let go of an extreme amount of nap when vacuumed, so most of what is in the HEPA bag is just carpet fibers. Other vacuums i've tried clog in a matter of minutes. It also has a squeak or squeal it lets out when you push forward, I don't know where it's coming from but it keeps vacuuming so I keep pushing. All in all, not enough to recommend this to anyone, unless they are looking for a "bag" upright since most of the competitor units you find in stores don't use bags they use dust cans that are gross and a mess. awesome.................exactly what I needed & as described.! This Elite model was made exclusively for SEARS, but Oreck decided to sell off thier inventory. I am so happy that I got it when I did. It is doing a great job from the minute I began using it, and I'm looking forward to the next 7 years plus..... April 13, 2012
Good Suction, good cleaning ability,Good durability, looks great, Love the vacuum so far but did not come with extra base plate as described. Still its a very good deal.EB Florida March 9, 2012
You want POWER & Suction this is it !!! I 1st tried the, New! Magnesium™ It is lightweight and does an OK job. My (Opinion) is if you are older, (70-Plus) and not very strong get the Magnesium. It is very easy to move around and it does as I said an OK job. The Real Machine for "Ultimate-Power" is the Top-of-the-Line, Forever™ Series Edge It is Not a Little "Difference" in Power & Suction. It is a (Major) improvement that as soon as you power it up on carpet you will immediatley (Feel) the (Difference). It is also (Quieter) if that matters to you. It just is a much more a {Substantial) machine overall. If you have read other Reviews they had concerns over the Limited Light Output of the othe Oreck Machines. That will not be the case with this Machine as it has Bright-Lights across the whole front of it. I did purchase mine from a Retail Oreck Retailer. The name of it is not important. Very nice people to deal with. But ................ Do-Not let them tell you that there is a {Slight} difference in "Performance" between the (Forever Series Edge) & the other Oreck up-rights. It is as I said a {Major} difference !!! Oreck vacuums are Sold to many-many consumers for their (Light-Weight). And they are very light in weight. The "Edge" is Heavier but as I have pointed out above if you are still Healthy & have Normal Strength there is no reason at all for you not to go with the "Edge". I live in a Double Story Colonial brick House with a set of long stairs to the up-stairs. It is like 2,800 Sq. Ft. with high ceilings. I mention this because I just did my Home Theater which is downstairs and then brought the "Edge" back up-stairs with me. It did not Kill me or take my Breath or wear me out. I'm a 67 year ole male that is 6'1" and weigh 217 Lbs. No health issues. The reason I am taking the time and putting this much effort and very long explanation is once again because, The retailer will try to talk you out of purchasing the "Edge" because of it's additional weight. Don't Panic try the "Edge" out for yourself !!! You will get your dollars worth I promise you. Oh, the retail store had to order my "Edge" they don't even stock it. This Oreck is going to be with my Wife & I for many yrs. to come. In fact we are discussing buying a 2nd "Edge" and just leave it in the Home Theater. Terry Honaker February 10, 2012
Plenty of Power! This is a well made, powerful vacuum, and my third Oreck. The light on the front of the vacuum is great, and the long cord is a plus. The Oreck Edge is great on carpeting, lifting the pile as you vacuum. But it is too powerful, even on low setting, for my Persian type carpets, and made it very difficult to vacuum them. And with all the suction the vacuum pulls itself forward, but I found it very tiring to keep pulling it back. My hands are small and I found the handle uncomfortable too. Also, not being very mechanically inclined, I had a hard time screwing the handle on with the holes on the inside of the handle. I ended up buying something else and giving the Oreck Edge to my son. He likes it. February 10, 2012
My Christmas gift to Me.. This Oreck out beats all other Orecks, and any other brand. After one use, my carpet looks new. I could not be happier. Love the vac hose. I have 2 other Orecks, bought this one for the vac hose. Works great worth the money!! It is a little heavier than the other Orecks but worth it. You could feel the suction. February 2, 2012
Excellent vacuum This was my first Oreck vacuum purchase. I have owned other vacuums including both bags and bagless. This Oreck out performs any of my previous vacuums. The vacuum has enough power to pick up anything. It can go from shag carpet to tile with no problem. The added wand attachment is a very good idea for getting along edges. I have had people over asking if I bought new carpeting. I told them no but I did purchase a new vacuum. This Oreck raised the carpeting up again and made 20 year carpet look new again. This Oreck outperforms my previous bagless vacuum made for animals, I have 4 cats and there is no dirt or hair left when I am done vacuuming. Thanks Oreck. January 5, 2012
